job.description: Job Summary:
The Solar Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician is responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems. The Solar O&M Technician ensures optimal system performance and reliability by conducting preventive and corrective maintenance, adhering to safety standards, and utilizing diagnostic tools to resolve performance issues. This role requires field-based work at utility-scale solar sites and collaboration with engineers, asset managers, and operations staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Preventive & Corrective Maintenance:
- Perform routine inspections, testing, and maintenance of PV modules, inverters, transformers, combiner boxes, trackers, and other balance of system components.
- Diagnose and repair electrical faults, communication errors, and performance issues.
- Conduct thermographic, IV curve, and insulation resistance testing on equipment.
Performance Monitoring & Troubleshooting:
- Analyze performance data to identify and resolve underperforming system components.
- Respond promptly to alarms and outages; implement corrective actions in accordance with O&M protocols.
- Utilize SCADA and monitoring platforms to assess site health and functionality.
Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere to site-specific safety plans, OSHA standards, NFPA 70E practices, and LOTO procedures.
- Conduct job hazard analyses and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Ensure all work complies with NEC, NFPA, and other relevant codes and industry standards.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Complete detailed service reports, maintenance logs, and inspection checklists.
- Support root cause analysis efforts and assist with reporting on equipment failures or incidents.
- Maintain accurate records of tools, materials, and service activities.
Team Collaboration & Site Support:
- Work closely with site management, asset owners, and engineering teams.
- Assist with inventory, spare parts management, and contractor oversight as required.
- Support commissioning, retrofits, and performance testing of new or upgraded equipment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical certification in electrical, mechanical, or renewable energy field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
- 2+ years of experience in solar PV maintenance, electrical work, or related field; utility-scale solar experience strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools (multimeters, insulation resistance testers, clamp meters, IV curve tracers, thermal cameras, etc.).
- Familiarity with utility-scale PV systems, including inverters (e.g., SMA, Sungrow, Power Electronics, TMEIC), trackers, SCADA systems, and MV equipment.
- Inverter OEM certifications strongly desired.
- Understanding of PV system design, layout, and electrical schematics.
- Ability to work independently and respond to dynamic field conditions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- OSHA 10, NFPA 70E, First aid/CPR certifications required.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in outdoor environments, exposed to various weather conditions.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, and working on elevated platforms.
- Comfortable working in energized environments under strict safety protocols.
- Willingness to travel regularly to assigned project sites and support regional O&M efforts.
