Summary Description

Under the supervision of a Superintendent, 1st Class Line Foreperson, or 1st Class Lineman, performs tasks related to the layout, installation, and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems and substation construction.


Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures.

• Read and interpret construction drawings (electrical, mechanical, architectural).

• Perform layout of assigned tasks.

• Terminate 5 KV cable and above with cold shrink termination kits.

• Install various outdoor lighting systems.

• Install underground duct bank systems.

• Install dry transformers and capacitors with supervision.

• Install medium voltage cable and terminate it properly.

• Operate line trucks and bucket trucks.

• Set up and operate power pulling equipment.

• Set various types of indoor and outdoor switchgear.

• Troubleshoot electrical problems using appropriate test equipment (with supervision).

• Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code and High Voltage Electrical Safety.

• Provide on-the-job training for apprentices.

Safeguard and maintain equipment, tools, and vehicles.

• Maintain quality and productivity standards.

• Stay up to date with new techniques and developments in the trade.

• Recommend improved methods of operation.

• Maintain good housekeeping practices at the job site.

• Attend hot line schools and rigging schools.


Job Requirements

Skills/Education

• High school diploma.

• Completion of a state-approved apprenticeship program or equivalent.

• Minimum of six years’ experience in the electrical trade.

• Ability to operate bucket truck, line truck, large trencher, and 580 backhoe.

• Ability to identify and operate meters used in the trade (volt/amp meters, meggers).

• Ability to size, install, and connect single- and three-phase transformers using standard connections.

• Ability to calculate voltage drop, mixed conductor conduit fill, and conductor derating.

• Ability to terminate 3M cold shrinks and molded splice for medium voltage cable (with supervision).

• Knowledge and use of lineperson/cableperson handbook.

• Ability to lay out and manage small projects (1–3 workers).

• Understanding of basic troubleshooting techniques.

• Knowledge of NEC, NESC, and High Voltage Electrical Safety standards.

• Good character, neat appearance, and mechanical aptitude.

• Ability to climb up to 70 feet on poles or scaffolds.

• Valid commercial driver’s license (Class A CDL) or in process of obtaining, with safe driving record.

Reliable transportation to/from assigned work location.

• Must purchase and maintain required personal tools.

• Ability and willingness to travel nationally to jobsites.

• Confident, decisive, safety-oriented, and self-motivated.

• Proficiency with laptop and tablet use.


Physical Requirements

• Work schedule: 40 hours/week, 8–10 hour shifts.

• Standing and climbing 4–6 hours/day.

• Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending 4–5 hours/day.

• Twisting and walking 2–3 hours/day.

• Squatting and sitting 1–2 hours/day.

• Lifting: continuous 10–35 lbs., frequent 35–50 lbs., occasional 50–100 lbs.

• Ability to lift objects of varying size and shape.

• Frequent grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine motor coordination
