Under the supervision of the Line Foreperson, performs tasks related to the installation of aerial

and underground line construction, outdoor lighting systems, and switchgear installation.


Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures.

• Follow and understand proper safety and temporary grounding procedures.

• Read and interpret outdoor electrical distribution system drawings.

• Perform layout and supervision of small line construction projects.

• Operate equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derrick trucks, trenchers, and backhoe.

• Install power poles, cross arms, insulators, and hardware.

• Perform rigging associated with installation of switchgear, transformers, and steel

structures.

• Erect steel substation structures per erection drawings.

• String aerial conductors with proper sags and tensions.

• Perform work on energized circuits up to 15,000 volts.

• Install aerial and pad-mounted transformers and related switchgear.

• Properly install and terminate primary (5KV and up) cables.

• Make correct transformer connections.

• Install substation ground grid systems.

• Perform layout and supervision of duct banks and cable installations.

• Install outdoor lighting systems.

• Ensure compliance with NEC and NESC.

• Maintain quality and productivity standards.

• Provide on-the-job training for subordinates.

• Safeguard and maintain equipment and tools.

• Stay up to date with new developments and techniques in the trade.

• Recommend improved methods of operation.

• Requisition materials and supplies; schedule heavy vehicles when required.

Job Requirements

Skills/Education

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Completion of apprenticeship program (lineperson focus).

• Minimum of four years in aerial line and underground power construction.

• Knowledge of line construction standards and procedures for primary and secondary

installations.

• Proficiency in safe operation of line trucks, bucket trucks, trenchers, and backhoe.

• Current CPR certification.

• Ability to troubleshoot distribution systems.

• Knowledge of dielectric insulating fluids.

• Ability to use electrical measuring/testing equipment (megger, volt, amp, and ohm

meters).

• Proficiency in terminating and splicing high voltage cables.

• Ability to size, install, and connect single- and three-phase transformers.

• Ability to lay out and manage small projects (1–3 workers).

• Knowledge of NEC and NESC.

• Must hold a valid commercial driver’s license (Class A).

• Reliable personal transportation.

• Own and maintain required personal tools.

• Ability and willingness to travel nationally.

• Ability and willingness to stay away at job sites up to two weeks if needed.

• Ability to operate a computer/tablet to enter job-related information.

• Good character, neat appearance, confident, decisive, safety-oriented, and self-

motivated.

Physical Requirements

• Work schedule: 40 hours/week, 8–10 hour shifts.

• Standing and climbing 4–6 hours/day.

• Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending 4–5 hours/day.

• Twisting and walking 2–3 hours/day.

• Squatting and sitting 1–2 hours/day.

• Lifting: continuous 10–35 lbs., frequent 35–50 lbs., occasional 50–100 lbs.

• Ability to lift objects of varying size and shape.

• Frequent grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine motor coordination.

• Frequent use of feet for equipment operation and climbing.
