Summary: Under the supervision of a Line Foreperson, this position performs various tasks related to the installation of aerial and underground line construction, outdoor lighting systems, and switchgear installation. Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
● Follows and understands proper safety and temporary grounding procedures.
● Reads and interprets outdoor electrical distribution system drawings.
● Performs layout and supervision of small line construction projects.
● Operates equipment including bucket trucks, digger derrick trucks, trenchers, and backhoes.
● Installs power poles, guys, cross arms, insulators, and hardware.
● Performs basic rigging for installing switchgear, transformers, and steel structures.
● Erects steel substation structures as per drawings.
● Strings aerial conductors maintaining proper sag and tension.
● Works on energized circuits up to 15,000 volts.
● Installs aerial and pad-mounted transformers and related switchgear.
● Installs and terminates primary cables (5KV and above) correctly.
● Installs substation ground grid systems and outdoor lighting.
● Ensures compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
● Maintains Company equipment and tools, ensures on-the-job training for subordinates, and recommends operational improvements.
● Coordinates material requisitions and scheduling of heavy equipment when required.
Job Qualifications
Skills / Requirements:
● High school diploma or equivalent.
● Completion of an apprenticeship program modified for linepersons.
● Minimum of four years’ experience in aerial and underground power construction.
● Proficient in safe operation of line and bucket trucks, trenchers, and backhoes.
● Current CPR certification.
● Solid understanding of distribution system operations and troubleshooting.
● Familiarity with dielectric insulating fluids.
● Skilled in using electrical measuring and testing equipment.
● Competent in high voltage cable installations, splicing, and terminations.
● Ability to size, install, and connect single- and three-phase transformers.
● Capable of supervising and laying out small jobs (typically 1-3 personnel).
● Strong knowledge of NEC and NESC standards.
● Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
● Must have reliable personal transportation to and from assigned work locations.
● Willingness to travel and stay on job sites for up to two weeks if needed.
● Ability to use a computer or tablet for project documentation.
Physical Requirements:
● Regularly works 40 hours/week in 8 to 10-hour shifts.
● Requires standing, climbing, kneeling, lifting, reaching, and bending for extended periods.
● Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs. and perform repetitive motions.
● Adequate vision for blueprint reading and identifying wire color codes.
● Ability to balance while climbing ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
● Willingness to work in varied environmental conditions (0°F to 100°F) and confined spaces.
● Use of personal protective equipment including hard hats, safety glasses, and appropriate gloves.
