Scope & Responsibilities of Heavy Equipment Operator Journeyman I(Not limited to)

This position performs specialized work as assigned by the Supervisor and works closely with crew members, engineering, other maintenance crafts, contractors, and process personnel. Duties and tasks are frequently non-routine including but not limited to construction, maintenance and demolition of exchangers, towers, tanks, concrete work, winter work, turnaround work, ditches, foundation, vac work, etc. Individuals in this role will learn and follow safety regulations and monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.

  • Operates various types of heavy machinery, such as cranes, front end loader, grader, skid steer, vac truck, tractor-trailer, winch truck, stake truck, dump truck, snow removal equipment, lull/telehandler, man-lift, scissor lift, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, etc. for the purpose of construction, demolition, maintenance, or excavation.
  • Coordinates machine actions with other activities
  • Takes actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, environmental releases, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects. 
  • Obtains digging permits when needed. 
  • Tests atmosphere for adequate oxygen or explosive conditions when working in confined spaces. 
  • May adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment, and techniques to meet the more complex requirements of the position. Resolves most questions and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor/Management.

Education & Experience for Heavy Equipment Operator Journeyman I:

  • High School diploma or equivalent with 3-6 years of experience in the field. 
  • Must possess and maintain a CDL with hazmat endorsement. 
  • PA Certified Crane Operator License is desirable.

Other Qualifications of Heavy Equipment Operator Journeyman I:

  • Advanced knowledge of safe operating practices for various heavy and mobile equipment.  
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Access, Excel, Word, and Outlook as well as other applicable software. 
  • Familiar with exchangers (cleaning and repairing), bolt torquing and rigging. 
  • Must be proficient with hand signals, rigging, positioning, moving, and staging of loads and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, contractors, vendors, and other department personnel.
  • Successful completion of all company mandated &/or job-related training programs deemed appropriate.

 

Physical & Cognitive Demands of Heavy Equipment Operator Journeyman I:

COGNITIVE DEMANDS: Meet deadlines, focus attention, work independently, work with a team, perform repetitive tasks, spatial relations, communicating, interpreting, organizing, reading comprehension, critical thinking/troubleshooting. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: seeing, speaking, hearing, smelling, kneeling, stooping, sitting, walk/climb, stand/reach, listen, writing, physical coordination, driving, climbing, twisting/bending, depth perception, assembling parts, keyboarding, Working in extreme heat/cold on elevated platforms with exposure to hazardous materials. Push/pull/lift/carry or otherwise transport 50 pounds. 

Must be capable of climbing, entering vessels, and working in elevated locations or confined spaces. 

Must be able to wear all Personal Protective Equipment including SCBA. 

Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, confined spaces, and extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

May work overtime, holidays, weekends, scheduled time off &/or shift work as required to support plant operations. 

Required to respond to callout situations in accordance with Company Callout Policies and practices. 

Occasional travel may be necessary.
